Why a Furnace Fails on the Coldest Night of the Year
A system that's run maybe three or four weeks total since last February has had all winter to develop a problem nobody noticed, because nobody was running it. A cracked heat exchanger, a failing igniter, a blower motor on its way out, none of that shows up on a mild 65 degree day. It shows up the first real cold front, at the same time every other furnace in the neighborhood decides to fail, which is why we tell customers not to wait for that night to find out. A quick check before the season turns is a lot less stressful than a house full of family and no heat on the coldest morning of the year. Heat pumps carry the same logic in reverse; a unit that's been cooling all summer without complaint can still struggle the first time it's asked to run in heat mode.
